Quarter 1 Reading Update for Mrs. Adams’ class
Our reading class uses the Houghton Mifflin reading curriculum. Each week we read a new story and work on a new spelling skill. Spelling tests are given each Thursday. Each week we also work on a language skill or two.
The following language topics were covered during 1st Quarter:
*Subjects & Predicates (Parts of a sentence)
*Kinds of Sentences (Question, Command, Exclamation, Statement)
*Nouns, Verbs, & Adjectives
*Paragraph Writing
To increase reading rate/fluency, we read poetry from our poetry folders at least twice each week, as well as sing “karaoke” with Disney songs.
We also use the Daily 5 program of Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, Word Work, and Listen to Reading. Ask your child about each of these components! The students really seem to enjoy this!
We have also learned about story structure (characters, setting and plot), as well as text features in a non-fiction article.
Please encourage your child to read at home every day! I look forward to a fabulous 2nd Quarter in reading class! Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
